Recently I have had several people ask me questions about lysine and its role in preventing cold sores (herpes simplex labialis) how to find clean lysine supplementation and how to get it through food. The studies I have read have mixed reviews on Lysine and its role in preventing and treating cold sores.
First and foremost, if you suffer from cold sores or any of the other 8 forms of the HSV virus you need to keep your immune system in optimal condition. The virus will appear physically when your immune system is low, poor diet choices and stress are two major factors in a low immune system and cold sore outbreaks. If you are having outbreaks frequently it may be time to consider a lifestyle change and the best way to do that is to start drinking purified water, change your eating plan and start cleansing your organs along with adding pure forms of vitamins and minerals (in that order). I will write a more detailed blog on this subject in the future since I have had many people ask me for the research and information on this topic. Today we discuss how to get Lysine through food and supplementation.
What exactly is lysine many people ask, they know it is used in the treatment and prevention of cold sores and that they can buy it in a hard pill but have no idea what it is or where it comes from. Well, L-lysine is an essential amino acid, it’s one of the nine essential amino acids required in humans for both tissue repair and tissue growth. It is one of the great building blocks for protein and collagen production. Lysine plays a major role in building muscles, calcium absorption, repairing connective tissue, synthesizing certain enzymes, hormones and antibodies. Essential amino acids are not all made by the human body and must be supplied through food and supplementation. Getting the proper amount of lysine in your diet can help with muscle recovery after an intense work out or recovering from a muscular injury, it helps tissue repair if you suffer from cystic acne, any of the eight HSV viruses, canker sores, cracked lips and feet, surgery wounds, bed sores and many more skin conditions.
If you are buying your Lysine in a bottle and the pill is a hard white pill you are also digesting a few chemicals along with your synthetic form of an amino acid. If you are going to supplement it should be in capsule form with a white powder inside, the ingredients should just be Lysine. You do not want anything that has a long list under “Other Ingredients” such as monocrystalline cellulose, cellulose, cellulose gel, corn starch, tapioca starch, magnesium stearate, soy, Stearic acid, citric acid and guar gum to name a few. These are all cheap chemical fillers and flow agents that do not digest in our digestive system properly. This goes for any vitamins you purchase, always look in the “Other Ingredients” section to find all the cheap chemicals they may be adding to your product “Other Ingredients” such as monocrystalline cellulose, cellulose, cellulose gel, corn starch, tapioca starch, magnesium stearate, soy, Stearic acid, citric acid and guar gum to name a few. Lysine can be found in a variety of foods, I have listed foods that are high in lysine: Red Meat, Turkey Cheese (Parmesan, Romano, Gruyere, Gouda, Swiss Hard Goat Cheese), Beans (Lentils, split Peas, .Cranberry Beans, Yellow Beans, Pinto Beans, Kidney Beans, Black Beans, Garbanzo Beans), Alfalfa, Fish (Salmon, Snapper, Mackerel, Halibut, Pollock, Sea Bass, Haddock, Cod), Seeds (Pumpkin, Pistachio, Chia, Sunflower).
Lysine Dosage
Daily Dosage According to the University of Maryland Medical Center:
Daily Dosage: 12 milligrams per kilogram of body weight (1 kilogram is 2.2 pounds)
150 pound person weighs 68 kilograms = 816 milligrams
This is what people have reported to me that they take:
Preventing HSV Outbreaks: 3,000 milligrams daily on an empty stomach, 2 weeks on and 1 week off (same for people with cystic acne)
Treating HSV Outbreaks: 8,000 milligrams daily along with other herbal treatments and therapeutic blends of essential oils from Original Swiss Aromatics
I search for a clean Lysine Supplement for a client of mine several years ago and found Superior Labs, the ingredients are just synthetic Lysine 500 mg in a vegetable capsule with natural rice flour as a flow agent (help product move on the machines that fill the capsules).
